Real-time beam diagnostics is mandatory in accelerators and represents one of the most challenging issues of modern storage rings and future FEL's. Recently, compact mid-IR fast uncooled photo-detectors have been used at DAΦNE to monitor single e- bunches using the SINBAD IR beamline installed on the e- ring*. Electron bunches have a FWHM of 150-300 ps and are separated by 2.7 ns**. Detectors performances are then suitable for a compact and low cost bunch-by-bunch longitudinal diagnostic device. To improve the DAΦNE diagnostic a bending magnet SR port on the e+ ring has been set-up with a HV chamber, a gold-coated plane mirror and a ZnSe window. To collect the SR light and focus radiation on IR detectors allowing the diagnostic of e+ a compact optical system has been installed in air after the window. Here we will present the status of the apparatus, the source characteristics, the optical setup and the complete acquisition system. This IR port will allow comparison in the ns time domain between data collected on both rings, and could be also used to improve DAΦNE diagnostics, i.e., identify and characterize bunch instabilities and/or increase the current in the e+ ring.

Submitted for the High Luminosity Study Group for an Asymmetric Super-B-Factory: Parameters are being studied for a high luminosity e+e- collider operating at the Upsilon 4S that would deliver a luminosity of 1 to 2 x 1036/cm2/s. This collider would use a novel combination of linear collider and storage ring techniques. In this scheme an electron beam and a positron beam are stored in low-emittance damping rings similar to those designed for a Linear Collider (LC) or the next generation light source. A LC style interaction region is included in the ring to produce sub-millimeter vertical beta functions at the collision point. A large crossing angle (±25 mrad) is used at the collision point to allow beam separation. A crab-waist scheme is used to reduce the hourglass effect and restore peak luminosity. Beam currents of about 1.8 A in 1400 bunches can produce a luminosity of 1036/cm2/s with upgrade possibilities. Design parameters and beam dynamics effects are discussed.

The new idea of increasing the luminosity of a collider with crabbed waist collisions and first experimental results from DAΦNE using this concept are presented. Consequences for the design of future factories will be discussed. An outlook to the performance reach with crabbed waist collisions is given, with emphasis on future B Factories.

The SPARC project foresees the realization of a high brightness photo-injector to produce a 150-200 MeV electron beam to drive 500 nm FEL experiments in various configurations, a Thomson backscattering source and a plasma accelerator experiment. The SPARC photoinjector is also the test facility for the recently approved VUV FEL project named SPARX. As a first stage of the commissioning a complete characterization of the photoinjector has been accomplished with a detailed study of the emittance compensation process downstream the gun-solenoid system and the demonstration of the emittance oscillation in the drift. The second stage of the commissioning, that is currently underway, foresees a detailed analysis of the beam matching with the linac in order to confirm the theoretically prediction of emittance compensation based on the “invariant envelope” matching and the demonstration of the “velocity bunching” technique in the linac. In this paper we report the experimental results obtained so far and the scientific program for the near future.

In the second half of 2007 a major upgrade has been implemented on the Frascati DAΦNE collider in order to test the novel idea of Crab Waist collisions. New vacuum chambers and permanent quadrupole magnets have been designed, fabricated and installed to realize the new configuration. At the same time the performances of relevant hardware components, such as fast injection kickers and shielded bellows have been improved relying on new design concepts. The collider has been successfully commissioned in this new configuration. The paper describes the new layout as well as several experimental results about linear and non-linear optics setup and optimization, damping of beam instabilities and discusses the obtained luminosity performances.

The iGp (Integrated Gigasample Processor) is an innovative digital bunch-by-bunch feedback system developed by a KEK/SLAC/INFN-LNF joint collaboration. The processing unit can sample at 500 MHz and compute the bunch-by-bunch output signal for up to 5000 bunches. The feedback firmware code is implemented inside just one FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip, a Xilinx Virtex-II. The FPGA implements two 16 taps FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filter that are realtime programmable through the operator interface. At DAΦNE, the Frascati PHI-Factory, two iGp units have been commissioned in the April 2007. The iGp systems have plugged in the previous betatron feedback systems. This insertion has been very fast and has shown no problems involving just a substitution of the old, less flexible, digital unit, letting unchanged the baseband analog frontend and the analog backend. The commissioning has been very simple, due to the complete and powerful EPICS operator interface, working well in local and remote operations. The software includes also tools for analyzing post processor data. A description of the commissioning with the operations done to find the best feedback setup are reported.
