Due to the heat problem, the repetition-rate of normal-conducting S-band photoinjector is limited to 100 Hz and can hardly meet the increasing demands of high repetition-rate free electron laser, ultrafast electron diffraction and electron flash radiotherapy. We proposed a novel high repetition-rate high duty factor S-band photoinjector technology roadmap. By lowering the electron gun gradient while optimizing the gun shape, much less RF power is required by this photoinjector and low transverse emittance can be well preserved. Following this roadmap, the first domestic high duty factor S-band photo gun was built and conmissioned at CAEP, which has opreated on a high repetition rate of 550 Hz, long pulse duration of 16 us. Now, this gun has successfully driven the world’s first high-energy, high dose-rate, micro-focus X-ray CT. In addition, some theoretical and simulation work on kilohertz repetition-rate, low eittance S-band photoinjector will be introduced, which could provide a new solution to high repetition-rate free electron laser, ultrafast electron diffraction and electron flash radiotherapy facilities.
