The source of highly charged ions "Krion" is one of the main devices for producing heavy ions for the injection complex of the NICA project (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility). According to the NICA project requirements, ion source should produce about 2-2.5*109 ppp (particles per pulse) of 197Au31+ / 209Bi35+. Basic studies with Krion-6T allowed now to get up to 9*108 ions 209Bi35+ for 2-3 pulses with the required extraction time 8 µs and with a repetition rate about 50 Hz. The latter means that charge state 209Bi35+ is produced during 20 ms ionization at Krion-6T ion trap. 20 ms to get Bi35+ is an extremely short time that corresponds to an obtained efficient current density of the electron string (beam) in an ion trap about Je ~ 950-1200 A/cm2/ Most likely, stand Krion-6T ESIS will be used for first planned NICA injector run during 2022 with higly charged ion beams of Kr16+, Xe26+ and Bi35+. These expectations are based on successful use of Krion-6T ESIS during Nuclotron run#55 at 2018. Simultaneously with these studies, work is underway to create a new drift structure for the Krion-6T source in order to increase the capacity of the ion trap and modernize the system for rapid ion extraction. Based on these researches and the results obtained, a new ion source "Krion-N(ICA)" is being created, intended directly for the injection complex of the NICA project. Currently, a vacuum chamber, helium and nitrogen cryostats have been manufactured.
