AB - The possibility to use proton and ion beams for ADS was investigated through simulation with the code Geant4. The interaction of various particles (protons and 8 ions: deuteron, triton, 7Li, 9Be, 11B, 12C, 14N 20Ne, 24Mg, 32S, and 40Ca) with energies from 0.3 to 10 AGeV was simulated in a quasi-infinite natural uranium target. The particle fluences, the fragment distributions, and the energy released were registered, and the energetic efficiency of different beams was compared. The energetic efficiency of a beam was calculated reporting the energy released to the energy spent to accelerate the beam. The dependence of the spent energy on the particle type, accelerator type and beam intensity was discussed. The energy released in targets with different levels of enrichment was calculated. The possibility to use a target with core from various materials and the influence on the energy released was also investigated. The optimal energy for protons is 3 GeV in a synchrotron, 1- 1.5 Gev in linac and 1 GeV in cyclotron. Starting with 7Li and energies > 0.5 AGeV ion beams demonstrate a higher efficiency than protons with energy 2- 3 GeV. For proton beams the optimal solution is a target made entirely from uranium. For beams of 7Li and heavier ions the use of a core from light materials with the length equal to the stopping range increases the energy deposition.
