AB - The study of the electromagnetic field in a circular waveguide having a partial dielectric filling is of interest for a series of applications including new methods of particle acceleration. We consider the structure of the electromagnetic field in the circular waveguide which consists of two semi-infinite parts. One of them is empty and the other one has a cylindrical dielectric layer and a coaxial vacuum channel. Incident electromagnetic field is a symmetrical TM mode launching either from the vacuum part or from the partially dielectric part. Such mode can be excited by a particle bunch moving along the waveguide axis. The analytical investigation of reflected and transmitted fields is performed. On the basis of this study, we develop an algorithm for numerical calculation and demonstrate properties of waveguide modes excited because of presence of transversal boundary. Moreover we perform direct numerical simulation using Comsol Multiphysics. The comparison of results of our algorithm with simulations is given, and the good agreement between both methods is demonstrated.
