AB - The low energy RHIC electron cooling (LEReC) project at Brookhaven employs a linac to supply electrons with kinetic energies from 1.6 to 2.6 MeV. Along with cooling the stored ion beam the electron bunches create a coherent space charge field which can cause emittance growth. This is the primary source of heating when the cooling is well tuned. An analytic theory of this process is presented and compared with simulations.
