Significant breakthroughs on laser plasma accelerators have been obtained these last few years. I will show the incredible evolution of this field of research which has, in record time, allowed us to produce high quality electron beams in the GeV energy range using compact laser systems. I will show the scientific path that led us to produce stable, high peak current and high quality electron beams with a fine control of the charge, of the relative energy spread, and of the electron energy. In conclusion I will explain why these beams are of interest in the near future for medicine and material science, in the mid term future for the development of compact free electron lasers, and for long term purpose for the development of accelerators for high energy physics.
