In order to have high stripping efficiency and sufficient production rate highly charged ions or rare isotope beams are injected at an energy of typically 400 MeV/u into the ESR and can be decelerated to a minimum energy of 3 MeV/u. They are either required for internal experiments or can be transferred to the low energy storage ring CRYRING@ESR or to the HITRAP facility. Both facilities allow further deceleration. In the ESR cooling supports efficient deceleration and transfer after deceleration. The role and limitations of the available stochastic and electron cooling system will be discussed.
