Details of the distribution of near-surface hydrogen in niobium cavities is important for research into mechanisms affecting quality factor dependence on the magnitude of surface fields. We utilized an elastic recoil detection technique to extract the distribution of hydrogen with depth resolution of order one nanometer in samples, which underwent different treatments similar to the ones with the known effect on cavity performance. Results of this study and possible implications are reported.
