Understanding Elementary Particle Physics with High Energy Colliders

  • J. Konigsberg
University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA

Experimental progress in understanding particles and forces at the smallest distances has been enabled by accelerator-based experiments, including colliders. Modern particle colliders provide an opportunity to study distances down to 10-17 cm and create particles with masses above 1 TeV in well-controlled conditions studied by large experiments. The speaker will discuss progress in experimental particle physics over the last 30 years, and review the status of recent searches for the Higgs boson and physics beyond the Standard Model in present-day accelerators.
