  The Global Design Effort for the International Linear Collider is currently preparing the Technical Design Report, which will be released in early 2013. The starting point of a consistent and correct design is the accelerator lattice, which defines the layout of the machine. Integrating the lattice geometrically and optically provides the basis for civil engineering and conventional facilities planning and finally the cost estimate. Tools that provide three-dimensional visualization of the lattice and tunnel help to perform the design integration and allow sharing a common vision of the final accelerator. We will present the process that was established to arrive at such an integrated design and the tools that were developed to support that process by analyzing and visualizing lattice files.

  This presentation describes policies and methods for parts management during fabrication at the European XFEL. The objective is to provide procedures for reliably gathering, recording, processing and archiving the complete mandatory fabrication information. The solution is a foundation for conducting Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC), as it ensures that acceptance tests are recorded, signed-off and followed-up in a reliable and orderly way. It achieves compliance with legal regulations in certain areas. One example is the pressurized equipment directive (PED), which for certain (parts of) equipment requires that the complete fabrication and usage history is tracked throughout the entire lifespan of the XFEL facility. In addition, the solution provides a basis for building the necessary documentation for later installation, operation and maintenance activities. The solution is established in the series production of several accelerator components. It uses DESY’s Engineering Data Management System as central collaboration and documentation platform.  
 
THEPPB015 Examples for 3D CAD Models at the European XFEL 3266

  This presentation analyses usage and benefits of 3D models in the planning and design of the European XFEL. 3D models are used in planning, design and integration activities, and they range from detailed models of individual accelerator components up to an integration model of the entire facility. Through DESY’s Engineering Data Management System, all members of the project have interactive access to all the models. Because of this general availability, the models are widely used and well-accepted as communication tools. They support vision sharing, and they help discovering and resolving design issues early (e. g. clashes). The presentation explains the modeling technique and shows (animated) examples of model usage. It also includes an animated virtual tour of the entire XFEL facility, entering at the injector complex and emerging in the experiment hall.
