Study of CSR in the JLab ERL FEL Driver

The study of collective beam effects is essential for the operation of high average power energy recovery linacs (ERL). For very short bunches, often necessary for FELs, coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) can greatly reduce beam quality. In this work we show experimental studies of the impact of CSR on beam quality in the JLab ERL FEL driver linac. Measurements taken of energy loss due to CSR as a function of compression are compared against simulations with a 1-D CSR model, showing good agreement. In addition we also investigate observed fragmentation in the energy spectrum. This fragmentation, which varies with compression, is believed to be caused by CSR and longitudinal space charge (LSC) forces acting downstream of the compression chicane.
