Jefferson Lab began operating high power ERLs in 1999. The initial machine had a modest electron beam power of 250 kW . The upgraded UV FEL, has operated with a considerable higher electron beam power. Sources of beam loss, the loss detectors, and the integration of the Machine Protection System (MPS) will be presented. The MPS is fully integrated with essential systems to anticipate and prevent beam loss in the event of hardware failure and to prevent accelerator damage in the event of actual beam loss. Additionally the system 'locks' the accelerator to a low power operation mode for both routine diagnostic checks of both the electron beam and the laser beam. In addition to describing how information from all of the essential systems is combined and interfaced to the electron source, this presentation will discuss the transition from the early designs to the current implementation and offer thoughts on how new designs can be made more robust, reliable & simpler to operate.
