Thin targets inserted into particle beams can serve various purposes from measuring the beam profile using wire scanner or scintillating screens to beam charge modification with the use of stripper foils. The mechanisms of energy deposition in a thin target for various beam types are discussed, together with the properties of particles produced in this kind of interaction. The accompanying cooling phenomena and their efficiencies are also described, from simple heat transfer to sublimation cooling. Finally, damage conditions are discussed and conclusions drawn about typical damage limits.
