abstract = {In September 2017 the European XFEL entered user operation after years of construction and one year of commissioning. To provide a fast and flexible startup of the various sections of the machine, the high-level control software was essential from the beginning. While progressing in commissioning and increasing operation parameter space, the enormous complexity of the European XFEL put hard requirements on the control and operation concepts. Having now the full baseline parameters reached, this paper will review the high-level software concepts and architecture in respect to effectiveness, reliability and ease of operation. Beside a review of the high-level software concepts and design ideas also general operation concepts and the interoperability between the various sub-systems in respect to the overall facility performance will be presented.},
