Hollow Electron Lenses can provide such active control by enhancing the depletion of halo particles, and are now an integral part of the high luminosity LHC collimation system. The centring of the proton beam within the hollow electron beam will be monitored through imaging the fluorescence from a curtain of supersonic gas.
